Several people have shared their interpretations of this painting with me and it’s fascinating to hear the different ways in which people connect with it, in particular what the ‘challenge’ part means for them. The challenge for me loosely takes the form of an invitation to engage with my past self - to me the two figures are different parts of the same person.
