When I showed this piece in an exhibition recently someone said to me that it reminded them of Dungeness in Kent (home to Derek Jarman’s ‘Prospect Cottage’.) A shiver went down my spine when she said it, because although I haven’t yet managed to visit Dungeness it’s a place I’m kind of obsessed with and I just know that I’ll fall under its spell when I finally do go there.

It has to do with that combination of industrial buildings and vegetation with an atmosphere of drama and bleakness. My current work is about giving my people places to be, and those places are essentially evocative of the landscape in which I grew up - moorland and industrial towns.

Acrylic and image transfer on cradled wooden panel, framed in a bespoke oak tray frame. Painting size is 25cm x 25cm, total size 29cm x 29cm.
